Introduction Communication

Communication is something you engage in pretty much every day. It is really difficult to go a full day without communicating something.

You need good communication for the following things:

  1. Healthy and meaningful relationships with your partner, friends and/or family.
  2. Having more fun at work, or having a more successful career with more promotions.
  3. A happy and successful life in general.

But What is Communication?

But what is communication exactly? Well, there are actually many definitions. This is one from Merriam Webster:

“a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior.”

In this definition we can see that it is necessary that some sort of information is conveyed. When you communicate you always exchange some information.

The Second Definition

But the Oxford Dictionary stresses something else which is important. This is the definition:

“The imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium.”

Here we see the importance of something that is called a medium. What is a medium exactly? Let’s look at its etymology. It comes from the Latin word medius, which means middle.

This kind of makes sense if we think about media today. Consider your television set. You may sometimes use it to watch the news. So you use it to get information that is disseminated by someone else. The news corporation wants to disclose certain information and you want to receive it. How does that happen? With the television in-between.

The television set is called the medium. This is why all these electronic devices such as the radio or smartphones are called media. Media is just the plural of medium. They are things that stand in the middle of our communication.

But media is much more than just our electronic devices. Cave-painting are a medium with which people in the past conveyed information. Also, pretty much all art is a medium in which we communicate.

Language itself is a medium in which we express information. Can you think of other things in the world that count as a medium? How about music?

So What is Communication All About?

To summarize, communication is about the following things:

Information

Transmission

Medium

Receiver
